In 1967, Dr. Wayman Spence, a visionary and footcare specialist, founded Spenco Medical Corporation with the mission of developing innovative products to better help doctors treat their patients. Among the many forward-thinking products that Dr. Spence invented was the first sports medicine insole designed for athletic shoes that were sold to Nike, a then-obscure shoe manufacturer. Today, nearly 40 years later with 131 employees under the leadership of Steven B Smith, President and CEO, Spenco is a dynamic, entrepreneurial company based in Waco, Texas that has evolved into one of the world’s leading footcare brands. Spenco’s core focus is to develop and market performance insoles designed with a specific end use or foot problem in mind. The Spenco insole collection includes] Spenco® PolySorb® Replacement Insoles; Performance Gel Insoles; Rx Doctor Recommended Insoles; Outdoor Series™, and the new Q Factor™ insole designed exclusively for women. Spenco also offers an advanced line of sports medicine products to include bandages, pads, supports and adhesives under the 2nd Skin® brand. Spenco’s steady success comes from its consistent dedication to research and development, and attention to customers’ needs. The company takes a global approach to tapping into the best biomechanical minds on the planet to develop innovative insoles that provide just the right balance of stability and comfort. Spenco also encourages consumer feedback through a program that allows the general public to submit ideas for new product design. All of Spenco’s insoles are put through rigorous testing within high-tech testing facilities at the Michigan State University Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory. During these tests, the insoles’ performance is measured for cushioning, energy return, compression and overall analysis of total insole comfort. Overall insole comfort is measured and evaluated through a specific formula that was developed by Spenco in conjunction with Sport Biomechanics, Inc. called the Insole Comfort Index (ICI). The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has proudly awarded Spenco products its Seal of Acceptance. Spenco works closely with the organization developing educational programs on how to treat their patients with Spenco insoles and where to send their patients to buy them. To elevate brand awareness, Spenco complements its trade and consumer advertising campaign with an aggressive consumer promotion and grass roots program that includes being the official footcare sponsor for all the Elite Racing Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathons. Currently, Spenco is in the process of significant growth both nationally and internationally. The company’s goal is to become the worldwide leader in footcare products around the globe – a goal that would make Dr. Wayman Spence proud.
